[Public] Movie Review: Knowing First the review...
One would think that hooking Alex Proyas, director of such interesting and, dare I say, awesome fims as The Crow, I Robot, and (a personal favorite) Dark City, up with Nick Cage, who, despite a LOT of well-deserved big-screen flops, I regard as a pretty darn good actor, would be a good idea.
One would, in this at least, be very, very wrong.
If you haven't yet wasted 121 minutes of your life on Knowing, don't.
Seriously. I mean it. Don't. It's crap.
It's very well-done crap, but crap is still crap, no matter how pretty.
Now, from the people who brought you, "The chick's a dude," "Vader is Luke's father," and "Kevin Spacey is Keyser Söze," ( the spoilers... )

[Public] Murder by Death clips This is a glorious movie. The bit I've been thinking about all morning is at 4:59.
...and if you've never seen it, yes, every single time you said, "Wait! Isn't that <celebrity>?" it was.

[Public] Dear LJ_Ads I was recently Friended by <deleted>, which appears to be nothing but an ad. While I'm sure the account's creator was very careful to keep within your technical limitations on such things, I would like to express my displeasure with this account even existing.
First, from a standpoint of principle, the LiveJournal service is, in my strong opinion, intended for use as a journal. Hence, the name. Using it for the sole purpose of advertising is, therefore, inherently objectionable.
Second, while I am aware the I can Ban "users" that I do not wish to be associated with my own LiveJournal account, there is the very real possibility that, if you allow accounts to be created solely for the purpose of commercial advertising, there will be a flood of them, and if I wanted to spend the majority of my time online clicking on "ban" and "reject" buttons, I'd be on Facebook, not LiveJournal.
Third, from the standpoint of LiveJournal's revenue stream, an account created solely to advertise is not likely to be *used,* which is what Plus accounts (like the one I am reporting) depend on. At the very least, therefore, "users" like this should be required to pay for the accounts they are misusing.
...and I would prefer that it be prohibitively expensive.
Thank you for your time.

[Public] Heh...
Pat Sajak has always struck me as too smooth and sleazy-friendly to trust, so it really amuses me to see him in an awkward moment. If nothing else, it proves he's human.
It also makes a strong case for what I've always said about the irony of putting Wheel back-to-back with Jeopardy, given the contrast in average contestant intelligence.

[Public] A Friggin' Awesome (Albeit Somewhat Pathetic) Discovery I happened across a little thing called the On-Screen Keyboard the other day, and it's Friggin' Awesome!!
When I'm lying in bed, idly surfing the web in an attempt to relax so I can pass out, the most annoying thing is when I find myself wanting to type something, and that movement ruins all my efforts. Now I can type without moving. Huzzah!!
Unfortunately, it's a two-edged sword, because now I can type without moving, and my laziness knows no bounds.

[Public] "Herding the Stars Forever"
Sky -- 1993-2008 -- In Memoriam
Even though she was always a bit camera shy, I sometimes caught her.

She was standoffish about it most of the time, but she loved her sister.

She practically lived outside. The backyard was her turf, and she'd walk the perimeter two or three times before settling down in the middle for a couple of hours. Whenever she got a new toy, she'd take it out there right away.

I'll miss the prancing-dance she did when she was excited about something.

[Public] Funny Things I've been rather enjoying Schlock Mercenary, though so far I've only made it to March '04 in their OMGHUGE!!1! archives. The funniest bits are the occasional author's notes. This one had me snickering for about twenty minutes.
Then there's Head Trip, which doesn't update as often as I'd like, but has some pretty good gems like this one, this one, and this one.
Finally, there's the always funny XKCD... Well, I assume it's always funny. Sometimes it's a little bit too deep in some esoteric niche I'm not familiar with, but when I get it, I always think it's funny. Like this one...

[Public] "Latter Days" Quotes "Look at yourself! You're so pretty and colorful on the outside, but on the inside you're nothing but fluff. You're like a walking, talking marshmallow peep. [...] There is nothing about you that's not skin-deep."
"Do you ever read the Sunday comics? [...] When I was a little kid, I used to put my face right up to them, y'know, and I was just amazed, because it was just this mass of dots. I think life is like that sometimes, but I'd like to think that from God's perspective, life, everything... even this... makes sense. It's not just dots. Instead we're all connected, and it's beautiful... and it's funny... and it's good. From this close, we can't expect it to make sense... right now."

[Public] New Tulsa Java
ATTENTION TULSA PEEPS
There is a new coffee shop called The Collective. It is on 11th St., directly across from the TU stadiums. It also has wireless internet access, a bar, and art/performance space. It is a neat place all around, and the people trying to live their dream by opening the place are really cool.
Patronize it immediately and often, and spread the word. We want it to be filled with cool people and turning huge profits as quickly as possible for a variety of reasons.
[NOTE: No, I don't actually expect my stamp of approval to result in a P.Diddy/Burger King-esque influx of customers, but it would be FREAKIN' AWESOME if it happened!]

[Public] Clone Wars Review I promised a longer review, and since I'm up, I'll write it...
Animation -- Pretty darn good. Of course, that fact isn't particularly impressive, because there was a big green "Lucasfilm" before the opening credits, so only BAD animation would be something to talk about, really. I wasn't particularly fond of the character design style, but that's just a personal taste issue. My only real beef in this area is that fluid/natural movement for extras was clearly not in the budget (the Twi'leks' tchun-tchin were especially unimpressive).
Cinematography -- Average. The epic sequences and battle scenes were pretty freakin' cool, and the level of detail was gratifying, but the bulk of the movie was basically either characters standing around delivering their lines (see below) or obnoxiously protracted establishing shots.
Story -- Pretty good up until the drastic shift (see the LJ-Cut), but really badly executed in several ways, not the least of which is...
Character -- Not much depth to be had. The named characters barely reached the level of archetype, and everybody else was either "some schlub" or "comic relief." Though, frankly, I think that's more an issue of...
Dialogue -- Lame. Honestly, it was terrible. It ranged from stilted to out-and-out stupid, and I lost track of the number of times banal repetition left me thinking, "Right. We get it. Move on, already!" Even if the movie was "meant for kids" (and given the level of violence and the way the trailers were geared, I'd dispute that), the writers must have had a pretty low opinion of kids. I can easily imagine the voice actors standing in the studio with their scripts thinking, "I'm paid by the hour. I'm paid by the hour. I can put Star Wars on my résumé, and I'm paid by the hour."
Pacing -- Absolute crap. It felt kind of like they cobbled together a bunch of cut scenes from a really cool video game, which I didn't get the enjoyment of actually playing.
Then there's the reason the number of movies I have walked out on now numbers three... ( Could constitute a spoiler... )
Overall -- Very disappointing, but Lucas the Hutt will probably still make a mint off it in much the same way Nintendo does.
